State Councilor Chen Zhili Meets with Indian Foreign Minister Natwar Singh

Chinese State Councilor Chen Zhili, who was paying an formal friendly visit to India, met with Indian Foreign Minister Natwar Singh in New Delhi on November 17, 2004.

Chen Zhili said that in recent years, with the commitment and joint efforts of the governments and all social sectors of the two countries, good development momentum has been maintained and substantial development has been achieved in the relations between China and India. It is of great strategic significance to develop friendly cooperation between China and India, the two largest developing countries. Sound, stable and developing China-India relations are not only compliant to the fundamental interests of both peoples, but also conducive to the peace and development of the whole region and the entire world at large.

Chen Zhili indicated that strengthening cooperation in culture and education between China and India is both helpful for people of the two countries to enhance mutual understanding and friendship, and positive in facilitating bilateral relations. Next year marks the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and India. We would like to take the opportunity of "China-India Culture Week" to continue to expand cultural exchanges and cooperation with India.

Singh says that the Indian people cherish deep feelings for China. We are pleased to see the current good momentum in India-China relations. Such friendly cooperative relations between India and China will not only benefit the people of the two countries, but also exert positive impact on the stability and prosperity of Asia and the world. I am deeply confident that both India and China will play important roles in the 21st century. The Indian people admire the great achievements gained by the Chinese people in the recent 20 years. We hope India and China will learn from each other and cooperate in areas including science, technology and education. India will also celebrate the important occasion of the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries next year.

Chen Zhili also met with Indian Minister of Science and Technology Sh. Kapil Sibal. They agreed to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries in such areas as information technology, traditional medicine and other applied technologies.

Chen Zhili began her formal friendly visit to India when she arrived at Bangalore on the 14th.
